As part of the Schools to Market project, some members of Green Team were invited to take part in a chutney making masterclass today.
We travelled to St Thomas More Language College to use their cooking classroom. A leader from the project taught us how to make chutney. She explained that chutney is a great way of using up fruit and vegetables and reducing food waste. The chutney uses some sugar, salt and vinegar which help preserves the fruit and vegetables. They had a lot of beetroot as it is in season at the moment so we made delicious Beetroot, Apple and Ginger Chutney.
The team reminded us how to hold a knife safely and how to chop and grate the different ingredients with care. We also had to use weighing scales to measure out all of the dry ingredients before putting everything in a saucepan and boiling off the excess liquid. We had to sterilise our recycled jars to make sure they were fully clean before we filled them with our tasty chutney.
When you make a chutney, it is best to leave it for a couple of weeks to enhance the flavour.
After placing the chutney into jars, we made special labels for each of them to ensure people know what the product is. We each took a jar home with us!
We can’t wait to try our chutney!
A special thanks to the Schools to Market project for teaching us how to make chutney today!
It was an amazing experience to be had and away from the fact that the chutney looked delicious it was very much enjoyed by the whole of the green team!
Truly grateful for the trip and all the vegetables and fruits we were provided!LOVED IT!
Mia:
It was really exciting to make our first chutney and we cried because of the onions 😭 ! I tried it when I got home and it was really sweet but I guess some people in green team don’t agree with me..
Lucia:
All of green team started crying when they cut the onions! I wish we could do this again sometime and it was really fun! I haven’t tried my chutney yet but I’m very excited to. There are different opinions in green team about it and I don’t know who to believe. The smell of the chutney was sour and kind of bitter.
Thank you to all the teachers who came with us.
I liked grating the onion and the beetroot even though I had the stain of the beetroot!!!!!!!!!
I loved making the labels. I also liked peeling the onions.
Two people cried but luckily I didn’t! I very much enjoyed washing and drying the equipment.
César
I liked stirring the chutney, grating the apple and making the labels. I was one of the two people to cry because of the onion!
I enjoyed measuring the ingredients and drying the equipment with César.
