History: Historians at Home

In Year 2, we have been learning all about the Great Fire of London in our history lessons. We have been able to find out how, why and where the fire started and we now know why it had become so difficult to contain. We have learned about King Charles II and what he did to make sure that no fire such as this could damage London in the same way again. We know that he declared that ‘no man shall build any building, large or small, unless it is made of brick or stone’. We also know about the importance of Christopher Wren in designing new buildings, especially churches, after the fire. We have looked at St Paul’s Cathedral and considered what has changed between the building that stood before 1666 and the one that Christopher Wren designed, that we still see today. We have even looked at a primary source of information (the diary of Samuel Pepys) to try to find out more about the event too!

As part of our homework last half term, we were asked to complete research and different activities as part of a home-research project. Some of our weekly homework involved different tasks, where we worked with an adult to find out more about what happened during the Great Fire of London.

We spent some time sharing all of our amazing hard work with our friends, we shared facts, information, artwork and even a model of London! Our most recent task was to research St Paul’s Cathedral and we shared our comparisons and understanding about the changes that we see today. Some of us were really brave and shared our work with the whole class. We spoke really clearly and lots of us listened really well, showing great respect for all of the hard work that everybody had done at home.

Well done for all of your amazing work, Year 2. Thank you to all of the adults at home that have helped you with your projects. It is clear that you have all learned so much and I am so proud of how interested you have been in our history topic.
