Reception has had a very busy week this week studying our new class text, Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne.

It is a wonderful story about a girl called Handa who decides to bring a basket of fruit to her best friend Akeyo as a surprise. She packs seven delicious fruits into a basket and sets off to Akeyo’s village. On the way, some cheeky animals take the fruit of our Handa’s basket. Then, a goat gets loose and bumps into a tangerine tree which makes lots of tangerines fall into Handa’s basket. When Handa arrives at Akeyo’s house, Akeyo is surprised to see Handa brought her her favourite fruit, tangerines! It was a big surprise for Handa too as she hadn’t packed any tangerines!

We had lots of fun reading this story and talking about the different fruit and animals.

Reception then created their own baskets! We painted some baskets a lovely brown and the coloured in the fruit. Next, we stuck on the initial sound of the fruit’s name onto it, e.g. g-guava, p-pineapple and a-avocado. Finally we arranged the fruit into the basket in our books.

On Thursday, we also tried hard to write the graphemes for the sounds we had learnt  in Phonics this week, ‘ck’, ‘e’, ‘u’ and ‘r’. There was lots of beautiful handwriting and very neat letter formations!

Well done Reception on your hard work this week! I am so proud of all of you!

What was your favourite part of our Literacy lessons this week?

  2. I loved painting the basket and sticking all the fruit onto the paper.

  3. Handa’s journey is full of adventures and colours. I loved the story very much. The most I enjoyed was colouring the basket and putting all the fruits.
