Continuing on from our Book of the week last week, the Three Little Pigs, we have been thinking about the houses each pig makes. Whilst we know that they chose different materials to make their houses; straw, sticks and bricks, we had a closer look at the shapes of each house.
We looked at some different houses on the whiteboard, and as a class we tried to see what different shapes we could find! We then had a closer look at the shapes we could see; a square, triangle, circles and rectangle. We even had a look at a special shape, a diamond! We sang twinkle twinkle little star, to remind ourselves of the special shape.
After we looked at the shapes and the shape names, the class then began engaging with our large and small 2D and 3D shapes on the carpet to see how many different shapes they could find and if they could create houses for the three little pigs and more traditional tales characters.
This exploration of shape was so fun, that we began to search in our outside spaces, to see what shapes we could find in our environment too. Nursery went on a fantastic shape hunt, and retrieved some of our hidden shapes, but also could match them to shapes they could see in our equipment, buildings and outside resources such as tyres and blocks.
