What a week we’ve had!
We have been so busy in our first week of Year 2. We started the week off by discussing our summer holidays, what we missed about school (lots of us missed our friends!) and what we are looking forward to this year. After this, we held our elections and cast a secret ballot to vote for our new School Council and Green Team representatives. Lots of children were very brave by making a speech about why they wanted to be our new representatives.
We learned about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and read a book all about the rights that we have and why it is important that they are upheld and respected. We then discussed three articles in particular and thought about the way in which we can respect them in the classroom, and also thought about how adults can respect them too. One in particular that we learned about was our right to an education, which we think is really important! We drew and coloured ourselves as Lego figures which will be displayed on our Class Charter, showing that we understand these rights and their importance too. This was when we did our first piece of writing in Year 2!
In our first few days, we learned more about our local area. We were able to identify school and our school from an aerial photograph and used this to be able to create our own maps of the area!
In Religious Education, we learned about the Creation Story. We learned that this comes from the Book of Genesis (which means beginning) and we discussed different beginnings that we experience and how we might feel when we start something new. With our learning partners, we all drew our representations of the different days of creation within numbers. We also did our first Catholic Social Teaching lesson where we learned about the role that humans have in looking after our world – this is called stewardship. In a footprint, we thought about the ways in which we can leave a positive footprint on the Earth.
In science, we have started our new topic which is all about living things. We first of all looked at images of three different animals and had to consider which of these may be “the odd one out” some us thought about where they live, what they eat and even what they look like. This got us all talking, using great vocabulary such as habitat and mammals! We learned about the difference between living, dead and never living and began to categorise different pictures, and we then labelled them.
This week we have also enjoyed our music lesson with Mr Hylton and have also been able to re-tell the story of the Three Little Pigs in our writing books! We all tried so hard to use our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
In history, we looked at some art work and had to think about what the scene may be. Lots of us decided it was the Great Fire of London because we could see huge flames! We then learned about how we respond to fire nowadays and thought about how it could’ve been different in 1666. Today, we found out a little bit more about some key words and were able to understand a more about what London was like at the time. We now know that houses were built closely together and they were also made from wood which isΒ notΒ good. We even started our chronological timeline about the events that took place in September 1666. We can’t wait to find out more about what happened during the Great Fire of London.
We told you that it had been a busy week!
Well done for all of your hard work this week, Year 2. Keep up the great work!Β
I have had an amazing first week in year 2. My favourite subject this week was Maths and RE, I loved learning more information about God and our world. I found Maths a little tricky but Miss o Neill helped me and I got it right! I am going to keep on trying my best and working hard.
