In Year 2, we are so excited to be taking part in a Schools to Market project. This is a really exciting opportunity for us, where we can learn all about the value of growing our own food. Our Green Team are helping us with this project too and will be going to a chutney masterclass next week. As part of this project, we have been able to do some planting of different vegetables on the school roof. To do this, we were split into two groups.
The first group were preparing the flower pots, ready to plant. We worked hard to get rid of any dead plants and weeds that were in there, to make space for the new plants. We found lots of plants that needed to be removed because they weren’t looking too healthy! Some were still quite healthy but we needed to make space for our project. We put the plants that we removed into a cardboard box so that they could be recycled. We were shown the stages of a plant’s growth and we were able to recognise these from our science topic earlier this year. We know that when a seed has water, it can grow roots and shoots, and it will then need sunlight to be able to grow more. Once we had removed all of the plants, we put lots of fresh soil into the pots. Look at how mucky our hands were! We even saw a snail in the recycling box! There were lots of baby snails that we had to be careful of.
The second group took part in some more weeding but our main focus was planting! We planted a different range of plants, some were flowering and some can produce different foods. We planted beetroots, chard, carrots, chives, courgette and marigolds. To plant the seeds, we had to stick some sticks in and tie strings to each end so that we could put the seeds into the pot evenly. When we put the seeds in, we had to bury them (but not too deep) and then cover them up again with soil. We then watered them some more. Like the first group, we got very dirty too!
We are going to very kindly ask our Green Team if they can help us by watering them. We can’t wait to see how they grow!

Thank you for organising the planting, I really liked it. I really liked it because I’m excited about growing something. I’m going to grow beetroot- and it’s going to take 12 or 11 weeks until its going to be a small beetroot.
I really enjoyed planting different plants our school roof garden. It was so much fun especially feeling the soil and getting my hands all messy. I cannot wait to see the results of our hard work.

I enjoyed making lines in the soil and watering the seeds and plants. I like nature and plants. I really liked the activity, and I’m excited about seeing the seeds develop into plants. Thank you to my teachers and the team who organised this.
This activity was really fun.Thank you for organising this wonderful activity.My favourite part was pulling out the weeds.The weeds roots to were very tough some were really tricky to pull out of the ground.Also, I enjoyed watering the plants.This activity was great I hope that we get do another fun activity soon.
I enjoyed learning all about how plants grow. Weeding and spreading the seeds into the soil was a lot of fun! I wish we had a garden at home, then I could plant more plants!
I loved this lesson thanks for all the teachers who helped us with this activity. My favourite activity was working together to pull the colossal weed, planting courgettes with my group and watering the plants. It was really funny when the snails were altogether on the big tree and even baby slugs and a adult snails was climbing the top of the weed that looked like a tree. I hope that everybody enjoyed and we get to do more activities like this!
In the plant activity it was so nice! Thank you for the teachers who made the activity. I loved the bit when we were planting a seed in the soil. I also like plants because flowers and plants are beautiful!

I loved the activity we did on the roof. I got to learn the process of how to plant beetroot. It was so much fun getting our hands dirty! We got to do stuff like pour water on the plants, put the seed in the soil and label what we have planted.

It was really fun planting, thank you teachers for planning it out for us! I liked getting our hands dirty and learned how to grow the plants and am excited to see all the colours of the flowers when they grow!
We were trying to pull a giant weed out so we dug so deep. It was really good fun and I would like to do it all again.
I really like that we got to take out some of the plants and then we put some soil and then we made holes in the soil.once we finish that we got some seeds and planted some. We also covered them up with the soil.
