To celebrate World Book Day 2023, we took part in lots of fun, reading related activities throughout the week!
On Monday we visited Daunt Bookshop in Marylebone to exchange a book for our £1 World Book Day tokens. There were lots of different fiction on non-fiction books for us to choose from such as ‘Dave Pigeon’ by Swapna Haddow, ‘The Boy with Wings’ by Lenny Henry and ‘Kay’s Brilliant Brains’ by Adam Kay. We then spent some time browsing around the books shop and looking at the variety of books available.
Wednesday was St. Vincent’s Book Day! Everyone came into school dressed as their favourite book characters. It was lovely to see so many creative costumes!
We began the day with a very special assembly with Miss Jones and Miss Forster Adams who told us about why World Book Day is so important, as well as the different ways that we can find our reading super powers! We then had a big parade where each class and all of the teachers showed off their costumes to everyone!
Later on in the morning we were so lucky to be able to meet Tola Okogwu who is a children’s author. She told us about what inspired her to become an author and how her past inspired her books. Tola moved to England from Nigeria when she was 6 and she found it hard to fit into a new country. Her new series ‘Onyeka’ is also about a girl who struggled to fit in due to her hair. Onyeka believed her hair is a weakness but she later discovers that it is a superpower which saves her and her best friend’s life. It was wonderful to hear about Tola’s journey to becoming a writer and listening to her reading!
Mrs Karney and Mr Kersys organised some reading activities for Year 3 and 4. First we swapped classrooms and teachers to read ‘The Hare and The Tortoise’ in Year 3 and ‘Rabbit & Bear’ in Year 4. The teachers were dressed up as the characters of these books and we had lots of fun reading them! In Year 3 we thought about the characters in the text and their qualities. In Year we thought about our own ending for the story and wrote these ourselves. We then swapped back and completed the other activities in our own class.
Later in the day our parents, carers and younger siblings came to join us in class for a very special story time!
Thank you to Miss Jones for organising such a special week for us! We really appreciate it!
What was your favourite part of St. Vincent’s Book Day?
St Vincents’s World Book Day was so fun! We designed our own book cover, our parents came over to read with us and we got to see a real children’s book author.
I really enjoyed St. Vincents book day! It was so fun seeing everyone’s costume.
