For the last two weeks Nursery’s book of the week has been ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. We have done lots of activities across our learning to do with this book.
After reading the story a few times we started by acting out the life cycle of a butterfly. We went into the conservatory and discussed the stages of the life cycle:
– an egg is laid on a leaf
– the egg hatches into a caterpillar
– the caterpillar forms a hard cocoon
– a butterfly comes out of the cocoon
We made up different actions to show the different cycles!
Next in English we looked at the days of the week, just like we see in our book of the week ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We started by each getting a day of the week and seeing if we could sound out the first sound. We then used this sound to see if we could tell what day it is. For example if the word starts with /m/ then it must be Monday! We then ordered the days of the week. Finally we matched what food the hungry caterpillar ate on each day! We sung our days of the week song to reinforce our learning! The song goes like this:
“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday too.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 days,
Each day different and every day new”
Finally we drew the different stages of the life cycle in Art. This also helped us practise our fine motor skills! As a special surprise today we also had caterpillars delivered to Nursery! We will be spending the next few weeks watching these develop through the differnt stages of the life cycle until they become a butterfly!
We have loved reading this story! What is your favourite story about minibeasts?
Hi Nursery! I bet you enjoyed reading and learning about the hungry caterpillar. You probably know everything about butterflies now!!!
