World Week in Year 2!

This week, we have been celebrating World Week! This year’s theme was about connections: ones around the world and with one another. We have had so many exciting days, where we have completed lots of brilliant activities. We started the week with Spirituality Day, where we thought about how we are connected to God and the global Church. We took part in different activities in the hall, led by our Pupil Chaplaincy team.

We have also taken part in Safer Internet Day, where we spoke about different connections that we can have online. We read Hanni and the Magic Window which was a lovely book that taught us about what we can do if we have a worry or see something that we do not like, whilst being online. In the story, Hanni has a magic window that shows her anything that she wants to see. From space to under the sea, Hanni’s window usually fills her with so much joy but one day, she sees something that she did not like. Hanni was unsure about what to do about what she had seen but people around her noticed that she was more quiet than usual. She eventually spoke to a teacher at school and shared that she had been worried about being told off. She soon realised that her trusted adults are there to listen to her and protect her, so will not be angry with her for telling the truth. We then shared some trusted adults that we could speak to if we were to ever be in a similar situation to Hanni, and we drew our own magic windows.

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, we read The Invisible String by Patrice Karst. This taught us about the connections that we have with the people that love us, and how we are still connected even when our loved ones go to heaven. We created our own invisible strings, thinking about the people that we love, and reminded ourselves of the fact that we can always speak to these people if we need support or need to share a worry. We know that this can help us to feel more positive and safe if we ever feel down, or worried. We also made cards for our local care home, as a way of sharing positivity and kindness to others. We know that loneliness can impact our mental health, and we wanted to make sure that we sent lovely messages to these people so that they know that they are not alone. We decorated our cards with a rainbow as a symbol of hope and as a symbol of our special school. We feel so lucky to come to our school, where we are respected and nurtured, and we feel part of such a strong community.

Today, we have celebrated International Day and have been so lucky to take part in, and watch, our fantastic school assembly where we have seen so many talents. Students shared dances, songs, poems and presentations where they celebrated their different cultures. We have been able to embrace the diversity within our school and within our class, we spoke about the different places that we are from and why we think they are special. We then spoke to our friends in the class and compared the different places that we are from, thinking about their similarities and differences. We feel that it is important to be friends with people from around the world because it teaches us about language, understanding and respecting everyone and the fact that it is important to recognise and celebrate our differences.
