Year 4 had a brilliant day at Epping forest!
After a very smooth and quick journey to Epping, we began the day with some art activities. Our first challenge was to find things in the fields and in the forest for each colour of the rainbow! We stuck these onto sticky card to make different patterns. It was quite tricky to begin with but we quickly found purple flowers, green leaves, red bark and plants of nearly every single colour! It was so fun to explore the different shapes, textures and colours of the natural things which are in the forest.
When we had filled our sticky pads with lots of colourful things, we took time to sketch them and other leaves or twigs we could find on the forest floor. Year 4 did some brilliant sketches and tried out many different techniques such as a shading, adding shadows and rubbing over leaves to create an outline/extra details. Everyone’s art work looked beautiful.
Everyone was quite hungry after our arty morning so lunch was our next (and most anticipated) activity. As it was quite a hot day we sat in the shade on picnic blankets to tuck into our delicious lunch. After lunch we had some play time together with our teachers. There were games of tag, stuck in the mud and lots of running around!
In the afternoon, Year 4 took part in an orienteering activity. With the help of our instructor, Olivia, we discussed the different compass directions and learnt how to orientate a map so that we could easily read it to find the exact place the secret clues were located. Using our Maths and map reading skills from Geography, we used the grid coordinates to find 7 different clues all over Epping Forest. We also had to bag and a timeline to help us work out the different periods of history the clues were from. There were stone age artefacts, a recording from World War II and a Tudor hunting lodge which was commissioned by King Henry VIII himself! During the orienteering course we saw many animals which live in the forest such as dragon flies, swans, geese, magpies and cows!
It was a very sunny day and the weather could not have been better!
Thank you to the SVPA for funding our trip to Epping Forest. We had the most wonderful time today and had fun learning and spending time in nature. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us on our trip, we couldn’t do it without you!
